As we embark on a new year of learning, I would like to introduce some of our new staff. Each has already become part of the Westmoreland Middle School family.
Ms. Sarah Castilgione, Spanish
Hola, my name is Sarah Castiglione and I am ecstatic to be joining the middle school staff. I will be teaching 7th and 8th grade Spanish as well as 5th grade World Cultures. I graduated from SUNY Geneseo where I had the opportunity to study abroad in Spain. I fell in love with the Spanish lifestyle and decided to live there for two years, teaching in bilingual schools and traveling around Spain and Europe. Since relocating to Westmoreland about a year ago, I have been a substitute teacher, a tutor for Hispanic families through the METS program, and a helper at the local farm market.
Outside of school I enjoy being outdoors, trying new foods, and spending time with family. I am eager to share my experiences and my love of languages with the students at Westmoreland. Here’s to a great school year!
Mr. Nicholas Courtemanche, Business
Hello, my name is Nicholas Courtemanche, and I will be the 6th and 7th grade Home and Careers (Career Discovery) teacher at Westmoreland Middle School. I graduated in 2013 from SUNY Cortland with a Master's in Health Education and have earned certifications to teach Business, Health and Physical Education. During the 2013-2014 school year, I was hired for two long-term substitute teaching positions and the rest of the year I subbed daily with the Capital Region Boces. Prior to teaching, I spent time working at General Electric and interning in minor league baseball with the Tri-City Valleycats and in the NBA with the Boston Celtics. All of these experiences have helped me become more prepared to teach here in Westmoreland.
Outside of the classroom, I enjoy sports, cooking and spending time with friends and family. My wife and I currently live in Schenectady, but will be relocating to live in Liverpool by the end of September. We are both very excited to be able to explore and find new things to do. I’m very glad that I ended up becoming a Bulldog.
Mrs. Emily Davis, Music
We welcome Mrs. Davis as our full-time music teacher in the Middle School. Most of our students know her well from being an important part of our learning community last year, as she worked between two buildings.
I am so pleased to be back home in the beautiful town of Westmoreland, NY. I was a graduate of Westmoreland in the early 90's and while I was here enjoyed such activities as band, chorus, drama club, marching band, jazz band, student council, soccer, spanish club,....and ...and...and - ok so I have always enjoyed being involved.
After graduation I majored in Music Education at Grove City College in Grove City, PA and graduated with concentrations in French Horn, Piano, and Voice. My time at Grove City was a busy collection of classes, friends, and lots of extra-curricular activities. All of these experiences lead me to a graduate assistantship at Texas Christian University. While at TCU I was able to not only work with the music education department but serve as the student director for the basketball pep band, assist with drill design and execution with the marching band, and guest conduct the Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra.
Following graduation at TCU my husband and I stayed and worked in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for 10+ years. Finally we decided it was time to come home. Now we live here in Westmoreland with our family (Josh, Allison, and the pets) Since returning to NY I have been pleased to work at Poland Central School and now here at Westmoreland. I have also had the joy of serving as a guest conductor for All County High School Chorus in eastern NY...and staying active in our church and my daughter's girl scout troop. It is still one of the joys of my life to be involved in things here in Westmoreland.
Mrs. Nancy Miller, 5th Grade ELA
Hello! My name is Nancy Miller and I am so excited to be a 5th grade English Language Arts teacher at Westmoreland Middle School! While I’m new to Westmoreland, I’m not new to teaching. I taught high school English in Rome for more than ten years and have spent the last four years working with various elementary grade levels. I have a variety of experience teaching reading and writing and am looking forward to using that experience and learning even more!
Outside of school, I enjoy reading, watching movies, and spending time with my family and friends—and a great deal of time watching my three sons at soccer fields, baseball fields, swim meets and basketball courts! My family and I live in Rome, but we are so excited to be a part of the Westmoreland community and are looking forward to the coming year!
Mr. Mike Reilley, 6th/7th Grade Science
This is my first year at Westmoreland Middle School. Last year I taught Biology at Ithaca High School. While there I worked with a diverse group of students from all different backgrounds and ability levels. I am very excited to work in this district and be a member of such a great community.
I grew up in Holland Patent where I attended High school and was a three sport athlete, running cross country, swimming, and track. I continued my swimming career at Canisius College where I swam at the Division 1 level. There I studied Secondary Education with a concentration in Biology.
After college I worked at the Auburn YMCA in their School Aged Child Care Program and subbed in the Fingerlakes area. I have a passion for education and strive to reach every student on a personal level. I am looking forward to a great school year!
Ms. Sarah Sydoriw, 6th Grade Social Studies
Hello! My name is Sarah Sydoriw and I am excited to be the new sixth grade Social Studies teacher! I went to school at Westmoreland, graduated in 2006, and was involved in many extracurricular activities. I currently live in Chittenango. I received my Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood/Childhood Education from Mohawk Valley Community College and earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood/Childhood Education from SUNY Cortland. I completed my Master’s Degree in English as a Second Language from SUNY Cortland. Last year was my first year of teaching and I taught kindergarten in the elementary school.
