For the second year, our sixth graders welcomed some memorable guests from Talons! A Bird of Prey Experience to Westmoreland. After reading Frightful's Mountain by Jean Craighead George, and analyzing many aspects of the text, students had the opportunity to interact with a beautiful falcon, Prince Ravi, much like the main character in the book. Not only did students learn about Prince Ravi, but they also met Macho Man, a Harris's Hawk, and Big Mama, an Eagle Owl. Thank you to Talons! Birds of Prey Experience founder, Lorrie Schumacher, for sharing her endless knowledge with students, and allowing them to be up close with some amazing creatures. Thank you as well to Mrs. Bradley for organizing this highly-anticipated event!
Our middle school students are becoming composting experts! Jamie Tuttle from the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority presented to the fifth grade students as part of the composting unit in STEM class. During lunch time, students now collect compostable food scraps which would normally go to the landfill. The waste is then converted in a compost bin which was donated by the Solid Waste Authority. The finished compost will be used in the middle school garden which will be built next year.

Westmoreland businessman Harold Kaltenbach shared his time and gardening expertise with middle school students recently. Fifth grade students learned about raised beds as they plan out a garden to be built near the middle school next year. Mr. Kaltenbach is the owner of Cold Brook Farms which specializes in locally grown produce. Thanks, Mr. Kaltenbach!

Late last week, Dr. David Kingwater, a Westmoreland parent, local chiropractor, and powerlifting coach, inspired our students to "Dream Big" and to support one another in following these dreams. Dr. Kingwater, along with two other powerlifters, spent time talking to students about following their dreams, breaking through stereotypes, and using challenges in life as a setup for success to become better and strong. They also challenged them to pursue their passions, both personally and professionally, and used powerlifting as one example. Our students were enthralled with the masterful way that they incorporated this sport into their message, and left the presentation thinking differently about themselves and those around them.
A huge thank you to Dr. Kingwater for his enthusiasm in spreading this great message to our learning community!
Thank you to all of our community members, parents, families, and Westmoreland Board of Education members for visiting the WWII and Holocaust Museum this week. Our eighth graders have much to be proud of as they showcased deep levels of learning about WWII and the Holocaust. Students not only have developed a deep understanding of important historical content, they have also developed a deeper sense of meaning and responsibility in making our world, the world that they will one day lead, a better place.
Thank you to the many volunteers who spent the morning at Westmoreland Middle School sharing their expertise with students for Career Day 2015! Students were able to choose four different presentations over the course of the morning, and were ecstatic to share what they learned with one another. Thank you to Mr. Courtemanche, Westmoreland Middle School Business Teacher, Shannon Vescera, Career Specialist at OHM BOCES, and the entire School and Business Alliance Office at OHM BOCES, for organizing this great event. We look forward to Career Day 2016!
Last weekend, over 50 students in grades 5-8 participated in the annual NYSSMA Festival for Oneida and Herkimer Counties. The solos are ranked by difficulty, and each student was scored on a 28 point scale. Our students' hard work and dedication wowed the judges, and more importantly, provided them an opportunity to showcase their tremendous talents. We had several score a perfect score, and each musician should be proud of their accomplishments. Below is a group picture of our NYSSMA musicians, along with their fearless leader Mrs. Davis.
